Sun Boxes in Rhyolite Nevada is a twenty speaker installation powered by the sun via solar panels. There is a different loop set to play a guitar note in each box continuously. These guitar notes collectively make a Bb chord. Because the loops are different in length, once the piece begins they continually overlap and the piece slowly evolves over time. View video

This work takes as its starting point the human desire for permanence, a desire made acute by the inevitability of our passing. If photography itself is a manifestation of this desire, our attempt to arrest or “still life,” plastic plants and flowers are a low-rent corollary. Suspended mid bloom and scattered throughout graveyards and empty parlors, they offer the promise of perennial youth, an eternal flowering, life ever after. Fake flowers both immortalize and render static the natural world. As such, they articulate a crisis between beauty and horror, desire and loss, artificiality and “the natural.” In our fall from the “pre” or “no” time of Eden, we have landed squarely in the artificial garden, the stilled remains of paradise. These sights of frozen or no time and the scale, duration and technology that make them possible, work to articulate a world where boundaries between the real and the artificial are increasingly blurred. If, in our contemporary moment, we are experiencing a gradual substitution of the machine for the body/mind, the image for the thing, and the simulation of the environment for the environment itself, then perhaps we are realizing Robert Smithson’s “frozen actuality,” the hallucinatory disjunction where “nothing is known but the impenetrable surfaces,” where “the artificial ingenuity of time allows no return to nature.”
I ♥ Mineo Mizuno sculptures. Mineo Mizuno was born in Japan and currently resides in Los angeles, CA. Water-drop/pebble like large ceramic forms are covered in small holes in which mosses are planted.

This is a drawing-watercolor-painting of a peeled pomegranate. Have you ever wondered how pomegranate looks like when it is completely peeled?
I did!! !!!!!! Anyways…. pomegranate is sooo good for you. The other day Paul was riding in the train and he saw this hippyish girl holding and devouring a huge bowl of red fresh pomegranate seeds. She either bought them already separated from pomegranate or she separated the seeds herself. Paul thought she bought it for about $20 at some fancy farmer’s market in Manhattan but I think he was just jealous.

I made this watercolor/drawing of naked winter trees when I visited Pennsylvania. Watercolor, color pencil and graphite on paper.

DIY Algae/Hydrogen Kit is an art project by Future Farmers Future farmers write: “Currently scientists are testing and generating strains of algae to determine which one most efficiently produces hydrogen in a process called “biophotolysis”. This is an exciting sector of research, but most of the activity takes place under highly controlled environments in laboratories within universities”. Future Farmers decided to create a “backyard/DIY” model which would allow people (not only scientists) to produce hydrogen. “The notion of people producing their own power is exciting. Researcher, Jonathan Meuser used this opportunity to exhibit a model of “biophotolysis” to test a system in his backyard. His test was a success, in that it produced hydrogen and could demonstrate the process using off the shelf and found supplies”. “The ultimate goal is to develop a water-splitting process that will result in a commercial H2-producing system that is cost effective, scalable to large production, non-polluting, and self-sustaining.”-Maria Ghirardi

Matthias Merkel Hess made these 28 terra cotta self-portrait flower pots for his 28th birthday. Each pot was planted with a nativis updated regularly e California trees chosen specifically for a friend or family member and then given away. Matthias Merkel Hess is currently receiving MFA at the University of California . He also the founder of the Eco Art Blog (one of my favorite eco blogs) with a focus on visual arts and the environment.

Vladimir Collection carried and perfected the tradition of the 18th century European trompe l’oeil, meaning “nature in artifice” tradition. Plates are reminiscent of giant cabbage leaves, sunflowers and lettuce leaves. Teapots, sugar bowls and vases are in the form of melons, pumpkins and lemons. Besides tableware, Vladimir Collection produces metal and porcelain flowers in realistic style. Each flower and leaves are naturalistically painted and each terracotta pot is designed and handmade. All collections are handmade in New York and signed by Vladimir Kanevsky, an artist, designer and craftsman who has been perfecting the art of porcelain inspired by nature for almost two decades.
Not only Vladimir Kanevsky is a great master of porcelain craft, he is also a very talented sculptor. He is inspired by human body - naked, solitary and vulnerable. Vladimir explores human condition, sensations and the search of self. I also think that earth tones of the terracotta and the fact that a lot of his figures face the earth, his sculptures are a lot about connection with the world, beyond self and losing self.
These are so awesome! They are animal pelts knitted from 100% nonwool yarns by Becky Stern.

This is Kim Holleman’s study for her Trailer Park installation sculpture. Kim Holleman constructed a park with little paved road, a bench, a fountain sculpture and some greenery inside of a one small mobile trailer. Theoretically this trailer can be parked and be a functioning park anywhere it goes for everybody to see and enjoy. I saw this piece when it was parked in Williamsburg near Black and White Gallery. There is something exciting about jumping inside a trailer car and ending up in a relaxing atmosphere of a beautiful park. Of course, it does not always work this way.

The “vertical planter” is a re-designed drain system where rainwater gets captured in the upturned branches. All kinds of moss and grass seeds will eventually sprout in the upturned branches - planters and make the city even more green. In Seattle, where it rains a lot, this idea is very compelling.

Diana Sudyka’s watercolors are amazing. A lot of her drawings and watercolors are of birds and animals. She makes high quality, limited edition archival inkjet prints of her works on sustainable, archival, bamboo paper.

I like this drawing of New York trees by Katie Holten. Just in case to let you know, there are not a lot of trees in New York City, so these are probably from New York state. Katie Holten was born in Dublin and curreltly lives and works in New York. Katie makes drawings, installations, sculptures and public art projects which are focused on the relationship between the individual and her environment.

Kako Ueda is one of my favorite artists that composes extremely detailed and intricate artwork by cutting paper. Craft of composing images by cutting paper exists in many cultures, especially Japan, where Kako Ueda is from. Kako is interested in organic beings such as animals, plants, people, insects and how they are modified by culture. In Kako Ueda’s cutouts I see outlines of flowers and organic shapes that belong to cultures and subcultures of different time periods - tattoos, deers, skulls, as well as Art Deco flower patterns, flowers executed in Victorian style.
